In Photos: Traditional Mnarja Festival Returns With A Bang – And Lots Of Horses
Families, farmers and agricultural sector producers from all around the island celebrated Mnarja 2023 yesterday in proper traditional style.
Mnarja is Malta’s biggest and oldest religious public holiday, dating back to medieval times, slightly before the knights had settled on the island.
The festival is a celebration for farmers who work hard all year round to provide produce for everyone.
Originally, it was celebrated outside St. Paul’s Grotto in Rabat – a worship place for early Christians due to his alleged shipwreck.
Folk dancing, horses, marching bands, and the lot – yesterday’s Mnarja parade took place between Saqqajja and Buskett, which has gained a reputation as the place where hardworking farmers find solace and relaxation after their laborious harvest.
