Malta Goes Retro: ‘Back To The 90s’ Brings German Film Crew And Local Talent Centre Stage

Malta continues to cement its reputation as a competitive destination within the film industry, as the German production Back to the 90s chooses the island for its shoot.

Minister for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, accompanied by Malta Film Commissioner Johann Grech, visited the Junior College in Msida.

This production features a crew of 129 people, the majority of whom are Maltese. A total of 105 Maltese and Gozitan crew members are involved in this film—one of six productions currently underway on the islands. As a result, the number of Maltese and Gozitan professionals working in the film industry continues to grow.

The 100-minute feature film stands as another clear example of the international investment attracted by Malta’s appealing cash rebate programme. The production, which will span over a month, will be filmed in various locations including Mellieħa, Valletta and St Julian’s.

In addition to its economic and industry contributions, the film is also aiming to make a positive environmental impact. Prior to the start of filming, the production team committed to sponsoring trees through Ambjent Malta’s “Tree for U” campaign.

This initiative led to the successful planting of 25 indigenous trees—including carob, olive and pomegranate—in the Manikata area at the beginning of April.
