Arts and culture are an integral part of our national identity and the Cultural Regions project aims to take that one step further.

This project, which will replace the current Cultural City or Village scheme, will see the Directorate for Local Government, Strategy and Policy Implementation award €250,000 to one of Malta’s five regions per year to host a year-long cultural programme.

The project will kickstart in 2023 with the Southern Region, which was selected via a ballot draw, and the regional council has pledged to invest a further €25,000.

“Our goal as a Region of Culture is to grow and strengthen cultural diversity by encouraging the involvement of various communities and strengthening the sense of involvement of the localities within the region,” said President of the Southern Regional Council Jesmond Aquilina.

Minister for the Arts Owen Bonnici said the project falls within the national culture policy, that grants more opportunities to regional and local councils.

“This policy provides horizontal principles on which regional cultural strategies are based in each cultural field,” he said.

Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli explained that the main objective of celebrating a Region of Culture is to increase and strengthen the promotion of Maltese culture and the unique cultural heritage of localities.

“This is how we continue to encourage the appreciation for Maltese culture and to continue to preserve it for future generations,” she said.

The Ministry’s permanent secretary Joyce Dimech praised everyone involved in the project, stating that collaboration can yield positive results.
