Maltese Cinema Steps Into The European Spotlight With Eurimages Bid

In Strasbourg, France, the Minister for Culture, the Arts and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, announced that Malta is making significant strides towards becoming a member of Eurimages, the cultural support fund of the Council of Europe which promotes the production of independent films across the continent.
This announcement was made during a special event at the historic Cosmos Cinema in Strasbourg, France, marking the opening of Malta Film Week, a week dedicated to celebrating the work and creativity of Maltese authors and filmmakers.
“This is not only an important step in cultural policy, but a clear and serious commitment that Malta is ready to be a creative partner at the heart of European cinema. Malta can serve as a bridge for various nations in the global storytelling arena,” said Minister Bonnici.

Eurimages provides financial support for the production of animation, drama and documentary films. Malta aims to join this platform to expand opportunities for professionals working in the local film industry.
Minister Bonnici remarked that as Malta celebrates 100 years of filmmaking, a strong message is being sent that a country like ours can reach high levels of success. He also highlighted the ongoing investment in the cultural sector, including archiving, funding and international connections.
The Strasbourg event also featured an exhibition dedicated to Maltese film icon Cecil Satariano, described by Minister Bonnici as “a pioneer and one of the founding fathers of auteur cinema in the Mediterranean.”

Malta Film Week in Strasbourg is showcasing five Maltese films spanning different genres and generations, including Castillo and Ciao Ciao, with Minister Bonnici describing the initiative as “an opportunity for Malta not only to showcase its potential as a filming location but also as a nation with stories worthy of being told.”
During his visit to Strasbourg, the Minister also held meetings with Susan Newman, Executive Director of Eurimages and Enrico Vannucci, Deputy Executive Director.
