‘Pastizz X’Jaħbat?’: New Play Challenges The ‘Inherited Maltese Pika’
A play about pastizzi and artificial intelligence? Sign me up!
“It’s like ‘Black Mirror’ meets ‘The Breakfast Club’, just wrapped in the realities of Malta’s youth,” Alex Weenink, the director, told Lovin Malta.
The play, set in a futuristic Malta, follows a group of eight people who find themselves trapped in a virtual reality ‘Xarabaganza’ experience that’s operated by AI (Artificial Intelligence), as they figure out their identities and coming-of-age crises.
Weenink explained how the title ‘Pastizz x’jaħbat?’ of the play came about after the writer, Kurt Gabriel Meli, and himself, found out that they are both interested in the dichotomies of living in Malta.
“We’re always told we’re one of two things here: Maltese or foreign, English-speaking or Maltese-speaking, Labour or Nationalist, one sports team, band club, or community vs another… pastizzi tal-pizelli jew tal-irkotta,” Alex Weenink, the director, told Lovin Malta.
“We’re kind of sick of that narrative, and wanted to create a story to show that it IS possible to silence the noise, challenge the inherited pika, and forge your own path forward.”
