‘Pawlu Curmi “Il-Pampalun”: The Man, The Legend’ Exhibition Launched
As the beginning of the Malta Carnival 2024 approaches, the exhibition ‘Pawlu Curmi “Il Pampalun”: The Man, The Legend’ has been launched as part of the 2024 Carnival programme in collaboration with Heritage Malta and Spazju Kreattiv.
This exhibition dedicated to Pawlu Curmi ‘Il-Pampalun’, was curated and researched by the historian Mario Coleiro and will look at Pawlu Curmi as a competitor and as one who supported Carnival activities.
The exhibition will be open to the public for free from February 1st until March 3rd, every day between 9am and 9pm at the Atrium of Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta.
Opening the exhibition, Minister for Cultural Heritage Owen emphasised that Pawlu Curmi ‘Il-Pampalun’ is considered by many as the father of the Malta Carnival and that he greatly improved the Carnival.
“Pawlu Curmi is considered a complete artist, as apart from his creativity in the creation of carnival floats, he is also a musician and a prime dancer. Anyone who holds Carnival and culture dear will surely appreciate this exhibition about the life of ‘Il-Pampalun’,” he said.
Born on 12th December 1930, in Valletta, ‘Il-Pampalun’ was the twelfth child out of 13 and from a young age showed interest in the Malta Carnival by helping his father Giovanni with floats and masks. From there, his carnival career continued and grew, touching upon elements of dance and choreography and much more. Beyond the carnival, ‘Il-Pampalun’ was a man of many delights, with a character that left an impact not only on the Carnival and Valletta communities but also left a colourful legacy behind.
The Malta Carnival will be held from 9th to 13th February and is being organised by Festivals Malta with the support of the Ministry for National Heritage, in collaboration with Heritage Malta, Spazju Kreattiv, the Valletta Local Council, the Floriana Local Council, the Ħamrun Local Council, the Żurrieq Local Council, GSD Marketing Ltd, and Kiabi.
