The restoration of the Old Parish Church of the Savior in Ħal Lija is entering its final stages, with completion expected this month.

This significant project, part of the Local Council Scheme, was spearheaded by the Lija Local Council and represents a broader commitment to preserving Malta’s rich cultural heritage.

During a recent visit to the site, Minister for National Heritage Owen Bonnici highlighted the importance of this restoration where the main goal of this project is to safeguard and protect the invaluable heritage of our localities.

“This initiative is part of wider efforts to maintain and promote the cultural heritage of Malta, by restoring buildings and structures, religious and not, of historical value, so that they can be enjoyed by future generations,” Bonnici added.

The Old Parish Church of our Savior, which served as Lija’s parish church from the late 16th to the late 17th century, is a landmark of Maltese architecture.

Notably, it features a dome raised above the roof, allowing windows to be placed beneath it—an architectural first in Malta’s history.

The comprehensive restoration, from documentation and Planning Authority applications to the meticulous restoration work, has been overseen by the Department of Restoration and Preservation.

Minister Bonnici was accompanied on his visit by Lija Mayor Anthony Dalli, members of the Local Council, and architects Mark Azzopardi and Norbert Gatt from the Restoration Department.

As the project nears completion, the restored church stands as a testament to the importance of preserving Malta’s historical sites, ensuring they remain integral parts of the community and cultural landscape.
