In a resounding triumph for cultural preservation, the Ministry for National Heritage has taken a step towards safeguarding the illustrious Għaqda tal-Mużika San Gejtanu AD 1906 from the brink of eviction.

Through the strategic signing of a promise of sale agreement with the property’s owners, this initiative not only secures a future for the historic musical society but also celebrates its invaluable contribution to Malta’s cultural tapestry.

Facing a looming threat due to dated pre-1995 rent laws, the beloved association’s future was uncertain. However, under the vigilant guidance of Minister for National Heritage, Owen Bonnici, a brighter future is being orchestrated. The initiative to preserve band clubs takes on extra significance against the backdrop of Malta’s vibrant festas, recently crowned as an intangible Heritage of humanity by UNESCO.

This act of preservation, as highlighted by Minister Bonnici, showcases the government’s balanced approach, honouring commitments to both property owners and the cherished musical society. Upon finalisation, the property will join the esteemed collection managed by Arts Council Malta, dedicated to the heartbeat of Maltese musical societies.

The government’s pledge of €2,848,700 towards this cause marks a historic investment in cultural preservation, with the total commitment to rescuing musical societies soaring to €19 million.

This investment reflects a profound dedication to ensuring that the rich traditions of Malta’s musical societies continue to enrich the nation’s heritage for generations to come. Through such visionary actions, the Ministry for National Heritage not only saves a piece of history but also invests in the vibrant future of Maltese culture.
