Irkottafest in Ħal Kirkop is an annual celebration dedicated to preserving and promoting the traditional process of making Maltese cheeselets.

Held in the picturesque village of Ħal Kirkop, this festival showcases the area’s rich agricultural heritage, particularly the craft of producing irkotta—a sweet, fresh cheese made from warm milk and seawater.

The event typically features live demonstrations of traditional cheese-washing techniques, allowing visitors to experience firsthand how irkotta was made in the past. Local artisans and chefs prepare a variety of dishes incorporating irkotta, such as ravioli, cannoli and other traditional Maltese sweets. These culinary delights offer attendees a genuine taste of Malta’s rich gastronomic traditions.

Beyond the food, the festival includes cultural performances, such as traditional folk music and dance, as well as exhibitions highlighting local crafts and artistry. Visitors can also explore historical sites in the village, including early Christian catacombs and megalithic structures, providing a comprehensive cultural experience.

Irkottafest acts as a platform for the Ħal Kirkop Local Council, in collaboration with cultural and tourism authorities, to promote the importance of preserving Malta’s culinary heritage and to foster community through cultural exchange.

Happening on Sunday, 18th May 2025 from 9am – 5pm. See you there!
