The Minister for National Heritage, Owen Bonnici, has launched The Malta Opus, a book within the Opus Collection, which will be the first of its kind to honour an entire country.

Minister Owen Bonnici described The Malta Opus as a tribute that uniquely narrates the story, culture and identity of Malta. He stressed that this project will serve not only as a testament to our past and present but also to the future of Maltese heritage. “The Malta Opus is more than just a book – it is a journey into the heart of the Maltese Islands, featuring exclusive interviews, new photography that captures the unique beauty of our country and archival material,” said Minister Bonnici.

The Malta Opus will showcase Malta’s extraordinary history and culture, both past and present. Three unique editions of The Malta Opus will be produced, along with a 50-page version that will be freely available to the public in digital format.

In terms of size, this will be the largest book ever created to celebrate a country, with one edition weighing over 38 kilograms.

“The Malta Opus will define Malta and what it means to be Maltese, capturing the essence of our history, culture and identity in a way never done before. It will serve as an eternal testament to the resilience, creativity and unique spirit that unite us as a nation,” Professor Victor Grech, Chief Editor of the project, explained.

The project will not only display artistic beauty but will also contribute socially. Copy No. 001 of The Malta Opus will be auctioned in 2025, with all proceeds going to charitable organisations such as Beating Hearts Malta and Save and Support Trust. Other Maltese organisations will benefit from future projects.

From 2025, Opus Malta will launch an annual training programme for six MCAST students in photography and graphic design to participate in future projects. This highlights the project’s dedication to inspiring and educating new generations.

Daniel Cuschieri, Director of Opus Malta, explained that after several discussions about creating an OPUS dedicated to a country, Malta was selected and the necessary work began in collaboration with government entities to implement this project. “We look forward to creating inspiring and beautiful stories from around the world, made by us Maltese and in Malta.”

Meanwhile, Karl Fowler, CEO of Opus, expressed his satisfaction that this collaboration will lead to the expansion of the Opus brand in Malta.

The Malta Opus project would not have been possible without the support and involvement of Daniel Zahra, Director and CEO of the Danzah Group, as well as Architect James Bonnici Camilleri.
