The Minister for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, visited the Salesian Theatre in Sliema to witness first-hand the remarkable transformation of this historic venue into a vibrant cultural hub.

During the visit, hosted by Fr Paul Spiteri SDB, President of the Executive Committee of the Voluntary Organisation and James Spiteri Tanti, Treasurer and Project Leader, discussions focused on the theatre’s journey, the challenges it has faced and aspirations for its future.

In recent years, the Salesian Theatre has received over €580,000 in funding from the Malta Arts Council. This support has been crucial for the theatre’s continued operation and growth. Recent initiatives, including full funding for an apprenticeship and a three-year operational grant through the Cultural Organisations Investment Scheme, have helped the theatre maintain its mission despite financial challenges.

Minister Owen Bonnici praised the dedication and resilience of the Salesian Theatre team, highlighting the theatre’s essential role in Malta’s cultural wealth.

“Our discussions underscored the need for ongoing collaboration and support to ensure the theatre’s long-term sustainability and continued development,” concluded Minister Bonnici.

“The Salesian Theatre opens its doors daily and has become a cultural beacon for the community. The management is addressing financial challenges by balancing revenue-generating activities with creative initiatives and collaborations with local producers and artists,” Mr James Spiteri Tanti remarked.

Mayor John Pillow emphasised the importance of venues like the Salesian Theatre in fostering community spirit and creating a welcoming environment for all.
