‘Viva L-Karnival’: Nadur And Ħamrun Streets Light Up For Carnival Celebrations
After three years of cancellations, restrictions and postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic, last weekend saw the first full return of the beloved traditional Maltese February carnival.
Viva viva l-Karnival! Ħamrun celebrated all weekend long with extravagant parade floats, dancers dressed in colorful costumes, musical bands, and heaps of attendees.
”Many band parades took part in the Carnival in the olden days but over time many stopped. So we took the initiative again as a local council, and we are having the parade here,” Ħamrun mayor Christian Sammut said prior the event.
Sammut claimed that although bands are associated with summer local festi, their roots actually lie in Carnival.
Nadur also saw its first celebration of Carnival on Sunday in advance of the Carnival weekend.
As per tradition the Gozitan town hosted many local dance troupes that rose to the occasion with eye-catching costumes and entertaining choreography.
With the first weekend of Carnival such a success, the anticipation for the coming weekend is real!
