Watch: St Julian’s Ġostra Winner Smashes It

Ivan Bartoli was crowned one of the winners of the St Julian’s Ġostra after an impressive performance of Malta’s oldest sport yesterday evening.

Footage sent to Lovin Malta shows the athlete running up a greased wooden pole, grabbing a flag, then falling into the water as part of the St Julian’s festa.

This unique tradition is a major part of Maltese culture, featuring in village feasts across the island.

The object of the game is to run up the pole and grab a flag before falling into the sea.

Many return home with a couple of bumps, but only a few people bring home a trophy.

Well done to the winners!
