ŻfinMalta Begins Artistic Director Search For 2024 Autumn Season
Malta’s national dance company is searching for a new artistic director after Paolo Mangiola announced his exit following seven years in the esteemed role.
Mangiola joined an emerging ŻfinMalta at the end of its third season and has since led the company through a period of extraordinary growth, bringing recognition at a local and international level.
Subsequently, contemporary dance now has a place at the forefront of Malta’s performing art scene, with an ever-expanding and dedicated local audience.
Mangiola has attracted some of the most established and pioneering choreographers working in the international scene, including Tânia Carvalho, Emanuel Gat, Roy Assaf, Rosemary Lee, Sergiu Matis, Nuria Guiu, and Francesca Pennini to name a few.
The company’s upcoming season features the likes of Mauro Bigonzetti, Ambra Senatore, and Lesley Telford, along with musical collaborations with local heavyweights The New Victorians and Alexandra Alden.
Mangiola also managed to build an international cast of the highest calibre, leaving 10 full-time dancers and two apprentices. He will exit the role in July 2024.
Besides an extensive repertoire, Mangiola has overseen an inclusive and participatory education and outreach programme for people from all backgrounds and with any relationship to movement.
“I am honoured to have been Chairperson since the birth of ŻfinMalta in 2014. In this time, I have seen the company progress and develop, with a beautifully high standard of professionalism and artistry in the realm of contemporary dance,” Chairperson of the National Agency for the Performing Arts (NAPA), Alison White said.
“Paolo Mangiola will be greatly missed, but he has left a wonderful legacy and repertoire for the company to continue to perform and build on. We wish him every success in his new adventure. I look forward to the next chapter for ŻfinMalta and the lead-up to our 10-year anniversary.”
ŻfinMalta will be entering this new milestone with a growing international profile and an extensive touring schedule.
