The Myth of Abundance – AP Valletta (Co-curated by Ann Dingli)

This installation, titled The Myth of Abundance, explores Malta’s relationship with its water resources. It delves into the island’s geological and cultural landscapes, reflecting on the scarcity of water despite centuries of interventions like aqueducts and desalination plants.

The installation, presented as a cabinet of curiosities, invites viewers to rethink the presumed limitless availability of natural resources, highlighting the fragile balance between water and life in Malta. AP Valletta, known for its research-driven architectural projects, brings a multi-disciplinary approach to this thought-provoking work.

Għonnella: Deconstructing the Garment – Luke Azzopardi Studio in collaboration with Marija Grech

This exhibit reimagines the għonnella, Malta’s iconic traditional garment, blending historical research with contemporary design. The installation traces the origins of the għonnella and its influence on Maltese culture, while offering modern interpretations.

Luke Azzopardi’s studio is renowned for its blend of fashion, art, and academic research, and this exhibit exemplifies his commitment to slow fashion and sustainable design. The fusion of past and present creates a rich cultural dialogue, reflecting on how fashion shapes and is shaped by history.

Step by Step – Becky Grech (Bx)

Becky Grech’s Step by Step* exhibition features sustainable, one-of-a-kind shoes crafted from 99% everyday waste materials. Designed for Gen Z, these shoes not only reflect a bold stylistic choice but also stand as a powerful statement against mass production and environmental degradation.

Grech, a shoemaker and lecturer, has built a reputation for her innovative designs that prioritise sustainability and craftsmanship. Her passion for shoemaking has earned her recognition, including the prestigious Premju Ġieħ l-Artiġjanat Malti 2023.

The exhibitions at Auberge d’Aragon offer visitors a unique insight into the intersection of Malta’s rich history and contemporary design.

Set in one of Valletta’s oldest surviving auberges, this venue provides the perfect backdrop for an exhibition that celebrates innovation while respecting tradition.

Other locations for more exhibitions from designMT are located at Fortress Builders, Valletta Design Cluster and St John’s Cavalier.
