As part of the national campaign “Together We Stand. Together We Heal” for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a powerful roadshow is making its way through Malta and Gozo.

Featuring hard-hitting theatrical plays written by Andre Mangion and directed by Joseph Galea, this initiative aims to spark community conversations and raise awareness about the harsh realities of gender-based violence and domestic abuse.

From Rabat to St. Paul’s Bay, these moving performances are breaking down barriers, encouraging discussion and providing vital information to audiences about recognising and tackling abuse in all its forms. And this is just the beginning.

The first two roadshows’ discussions revolved around harmful gender stereotypes, stalking and harassment, intimate partner violence, cyberviolence, gender-based violence within same-sex relationships and gender-based violence at the workplace.

The public attending these roadshows explored several themes through the discussions that were generated after the plays. Striking interventions were made addressing issues of consent, control, initial signs of abuse, mental health, helping victims and the multiple effects of harassment, stalking and cyberviolence on victims.

Moreover, in the presence of the Commissioner on Gender-Based Violence and Domestic Violence Ms Samantha Pace Gasan, Community Police within the Malta Police Force and other stakeholders, the audience had the opportunity to ask questions on procedures relevant to gender-based violence and domestic violence cases.

Overall, this event focused on highlighting the challenges victims face when subjected to abuse, providing insight into their lived realities. Attendees received guidance on supporting persons who may be experiencing abuse with reference to the several professional support services which assist both victims and perpetrators of gender-based violence and domestic violence.

With the next three roadshows, which are going to take place in Gżira, Fgura and Ċittadella, the Commission on Gender-Based Violence and Domestic Violence aims to continue generating informative discussions in these communities whilst emphasising the importance of collective activism against gender-based violence and domestic violence.
