Are you working and looking to further your career part-time? Are you interested in helping and bringing about positive and productive changes in the adult, vulnerable, and incarcerated community?

A first-of-its-kind part-time evening, first degree course in adult education, training, and development is set to kick off at the University of Malta in October 2022.

Whether it is the need for new career opportunities, personal development, free time due to retirement or simply to gain new skills there is an increasing demand for adult educators. And this programme will train you in the field, which focuses on people who are choosing to study again later in life.

But what is the course about?

The course covers various topics ranging from Psychology of Adult Education to Cognitive Neuroandragogy (the study of brain activity when absorbing information). It also focuses on Employability, the Evaluation and Quality Assurance in Adult Education, Adult teaching of Numeracy, Literacy, and Language.

You will also learn on how to promote Active and Healthy Lifestyles, educate adults on sustainable developments, and train in multicultural contexts.

Offering literacy in different areas like media and politics and digital and financial, you could also be working in a very rewarding environment with adults who have learning difficulties and disabilities or prisoners looking to reintegrate within society through education.

But what are the goals?

Simple, it’s to finally recognise adult education and lifelong learning in Malta and Gozo. It opens the door and encourages the development and fair recognition of adult educators and trainers which will raise their professional status and open up more opportunities for employment.

And finally, offer a second opportunity to pursue additional education and raise one’s credentials to a Hon Degree level at the University of Malta on a part-time, evening schedule.

What will it do for your career?

It will expand your portfolio and offer opportunities in the growing sector of lifelong learning with public or private entities as a professionally qualified adult educator.

Should you wish to take your studies further, you can pursue studies at a Master’s level in adult education, training and development or a related area.

What are the fees?

The great thing about it is that you pay at the beginning of every semester. There are a total of six spread over three years and each one is €450.

Not sure if you have the time or resources?

You can get part-fund through the Get Qualified scheme, comprising a tax rebate of up to 70% of eligible costs, subject to terms and conditions. If you already study or work full-time this course will not get in the way as it runs on a part-time evening basis.

50% of lectures will be held online – this facilitates managing the demanding schedules of adult students. The course includes a placement component that, when applicable, can be done by the student at the workplace.
