To celebrate the International Day of Older Persons, Esplora Interactive Science Centre hosted senior citizens from across Malta for a special event dedicated to science and learning.

The occasion highlighted Esplora’s commitment to encouraging active, meaningful lives among older adults and demonstrated that science can inspire people of all ages.

Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed interactive exhibits, engaging science shows and a vibrant atmosphere that encouraged curiosity and exploration. Present at the event were Senior Director of Esplora, Ms Mary Ann Cauchi, and Deputy Director of STEAM Engagement, Ms Kiki Mizzi.

Ms Mary Ann Cauchi said that today shows, that curiosity has no age. “At Esplora we are widening access so that older adults can explore and connect through science both on site and in the community. Our renewed collaboration with Active Ageing and Community Care (AACC) strengthens this mission with tailored offers and outreach, ensuring science remains a joyful part of everyday life.”

She added that Esplora is using STEAM methods to make science welcoming and practical. In addition to the main attractions, visitors also participated in a variety of special activities curated for the day.

Attendees enjoyed a variety of activities, including a taster of the Villa Bighi heritage tour, an informative talk on the importance of bees, and the interactive workshop Kamra tal-Kliem Mistur, which combined science with culture by demonstrating Maltese idioms through hands-on experiments. Designed with older learners in mind, these sessions were engaging, social and fun, sparking both laughter and learning.

She said that: “We’re blending science with language and culture so that everyone finds an entry point into discovery. The result is confidence thus prompting people to try, experiment and share stories. That’s how lifelong learning flourishes.”

This celebration also highlighted the ongoing collaboration between Esplora and Active Ageing and Community Care (AACC), which stems from a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed two years ago, further strengthening their shared commitment to inclusivity in science education. The renewed MoU aims to enhance access to science and technology for senior citizens by providing reduced entry rates and tailored educational packages. It also aligns with the government’s broader efforts to promote physical and intellectual engagement among older adults.

Through this initiative, around 7,000 older adults benefit from engaging experiences at Esplora. Beyond on-site visits, the Esplora team extends its outreach by bringing science directly to older persons’ homes as part of its community engagement programme, ensuring that the excitement of discovery reaches every corner of society. The event served as a powerful reminder that education and discovery have no age limits. Esplora remains committed to being a place where people of all generations can come together to explore, learn and share, ensuring that the spirit of wonder continues to thrive at every stage of life.
