Government And Teacher’s Union Shake Hands On Educator’s Sectoral Agreement

The educators’ sectoral agreement was finalised by The Government and the Teachers’ Union at last after a year and a half of negotiations and a brief strike.

While agreements for church and independent schools are still pending, both parties announced that the agreement will enhance salaries and working conditions for over 11,000 educators in state schools.

This comes after further negotiations were necessary after union members expressed dissatisfaction with the proposed conditions although an initial agreement was reached in May.

Last week, 92% of the union membership supported the revised agreement.

The previous five-year agreement expired two years ago, and educators will receive back pay for the increases in their allowances.

The 18-month negotiation period was marked by controversy, culminating in a one-day strike in November. “It was a challenging period and we had to resort to industrial action, but thankfully that didn’t hinder the progress of negotiations,” MUT president Marco Bonnici said at a press conference before the signing.
