A new journal on gender and sexuality in Mediterranean countries has been launched, highlighting academic research across a range of related topics.

The Directorate for Human Rights within the Parliamentary Secretariat for Equality and Reforms, together with the Office of the Prime Minister and the Department of Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Malta, have signed an agreement that will launch the publication of the journal “ASTARTE.”

The Parliamentary Secretary for Equality and Reforms, Rebecca Buttigieg, who was present at the signing, stated that this initiative will provide authoritative studies and publicly accessible information covering gender identity, with a particular focus on Malta and neighbouring Mediterranean countries.

She added that the journal ASTARTE, named after the Semitic goddess of love and fertility, will serve as a platform for researchers in a sector encompassing social, human, and medical aspects, among others.

Buttigieg emphasised that this represents an important step forward to increase knowledge and strengthen inter-Mediterranean dialogue, serving as a bridge between national and international human rights organisations, civil society, and communities, while promoting policies that respect human rights ethically.

The Rector of the University, Professor Alfred Vella, said that the agreement formalises the partnership between the University’s academic expertise and the government through the Directorate for Human Rights. He added that the Department of Gender and Sexuality Studies will take on the editorial role, ensuring the integrity of the research published in the journal.

ASTARTE will publish research studies and articles in both Maltese and English, with the first edition expected in the final quarter of next year. The agreement also provides for workshops and conferences where research conducted by academics, students, and activists will be presented.

Authors wishing to submit work for the first edition of ASTARTE are invited to send their submissions to [email protected] and may request further information from the Department of Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Malta.
