Teachers Start Benefitting From €1,000 Bonus Following New Sectoral Agreement
Malta’s teachers have started to benefit from the new sectoral agreement that took over a year of negotiations, industrial action, and protests to get to. This includes a one-off €1,000 payment to all educators under this agreement.
“Today, they have the best agreement ever signed for educators,” the Education Ministry wrote in a press release earlier this week.
The teachers who fulfill their duties in the Primary sector will receive an allowance of €1,000 per year which started last year and a pro-rata for this year. This allowance will eventually start to be given monthly.
Education Minister Clifton Grima stated that this agreement will strongly improve the income and conditions of educators through salary increases for all grades.
“It is an agreement for five years and will start counting with arrears from the beginning of last year until the end of 2027,” he said.
“The agreement doesn’t only include a significant improvement in the financial package, but also in working conditions and career advancement at a faster pace. All this will continue to strengthen the professional development of educators.”
The salary will further include:
- The First Aider allowance, the amount of which will be adjusted according to the sectoral agreement retroactively from 1st January 2023 and pro-rata for this year. Afterwards, this allowance starts to be given monthly;
- The Special Education Program (SEP) allowance whose amount will also be adjusted according to the sectoral agreement in arrears from 1st January 2023 and pro-rata for this year. Afterwards, this allowance starts to be given monthly;
- The Shared allowance with an adjustable amount according to the sectoral agreement in retrospect from 1st January 2023 and pro-rata for this year. Afterwards, this allowance starts to be given monthly;
- MAVC full-time educators will also receive €1,000 according to the sectoral agreement in arrears from 1st January 2023 and pro-rata for this year. This allowance will then start to be given monthly.
