Teachers’ Union Halts LSE Transfers Across Malta ‘To Better Support Students’

Following the concern that parents have shown after LSE-supported students were told to stay home for two months, the UPE (Union of Professional Educators) halted LSE transfers to better support students.
“After extensive consultation with our members, the UPE has intervened to halt the mid-year transfer of Year 11 LSEs, ensuring they remain at their secondary schools to continue supporting the students under their care. This directive, upheld by the majority of Year 11 LSEs for the past two years, prioritises the stability and continuity of support for students,” the UPE said in a statement.

This comes after parents expressed concern for their year-11 children who have been told to remain at home between 28th April and 29th June. The Education authorities had prepared a special course for these children for that period, however, very few parents applied for their children to attend. It is suggested that the parents were not properly consulted with by the Education Authorities.
The UPE went on to state that the Ministry’s failure to engage with them over the past two year has increased tensions. The union states that despite the UPE’s efforts to “propose solutions, the Ministry has remained silent, prioritising administrative convenience over student welfare.” The UPE went on to request to its members to report any pressures requesting them to not adhere to the new directives.
