Popular Maltese TikToker Riyana Stivala shared the reason behind her resignation as a Learning Support Educator which stemmed from her being rejected by the school.

“I just heard of another situation where a teacher had to resign after six years and honestly it gave me the courage to speak out,” Riyana began, referencing a video by Maltese teacher Shanice who resigned last September.

“Last month I had to resign from Education. I worked as an LSE. I studied for this career, I worked hard,” Stivala said.

“I asked for help from the Education department however no one listened to me and no one helped me,” Riyana expressing the lack of support she faced.

“The head of school where I was placed did not accept me because of my tattoos,” Stivala said, pointing out one source of the discrimination she allegedly faced.

However, she clarified that this wasn’t the reason for her resignation.

“On 8th March I asked for sick leave, I went to work as usual and I asked for sick leave. I went to the Head’s office and told her I was not feeling well and I asked her to find a replacement,” Stivala started off.

To her surprise, Riyana’s leave was denied because a replacement wasn’t available.

She emphasised the need to recognise that illnesses aren’t always physical, revealing she had a panic attack that day.

“This is something we need to learn once and for all,” the LSE emphasised.

Riyana also disclosed that she suffered from a panic attack on the day when she asked to go home on sick leave and did so because she needed to rest.

She also went on to explain how her anxiety attacks occur when she accumulates her problems and doesn’t speak about what’s bothering her.

Riyana also shared how she had been going to work unhappy for the last year and a half.

“I spent the last two and half weeks crying while driving to work,” Stivala emotionally shared with her audience.

Riyana also wrote that she asked for a transfer however it was denied and the issue was not addressed.

“They hid that story with my personal stuff and hobbies that I do and have nothing to do with me working as an LSE (such as acting, doing TikToks, taking photos with bikini etc…) I mean, am I the only teacher/LSE who does that?” Stivala concluded in her video.

Riyana filmed the video a few weeks ago however decided to publish it now, two months since she handed in her resignation.
