Xjenza Malta Hosts International Workshop On Space Data To Drive Innovation

Xjenza Malta, in collaboration with EURISY, the Association of European Space Agencies, hosted a two-day international workshop themed “Big Data: Space Solutions for Society” at Esplora Planetarium Hall. The event brought together key figures from research, policy, and industry across Malta and Europe to explore how satellite data is being transformed into tools for sustainable solutions to societal challenges.
Through this workshop, Xjenza Malta strengthened its commitment to supporting the use of space technologies and satellite data in the economy and public services, while reaffirming its goal to address environmental and social challenges through evidence-based and innovative solutions.
The event reinforced Malta’s role within the European space ecosystem and provided a platform for productive dialogue between institutions, researchers, and industry players.

In his speech, Parliamentary Secretary Keith Azzopardi Tanti stated: “The government is committed to supporting research and innovation in all areas, including space technology. This workshop shows how Malta is working to develop a collaborative and practical space ecosystem.”
“We are determined to continue building capacity in this field because satellite data can have a real impact on our daily lives – from protecting natural resources to planning more effectively for sustainable development. Malta aims to be at the forefront of this data revolution,” he added.
Silvio Scerri, CEO of Xjenza Malta, said: “Through initiatives like this, we are shaping a future where data and technology enhance public services and continue to position Malta as a hub for space-based innovation.”
The first day of the workshop focused on national applications, including case studies demonstrating how Earth Observation technologies are being integrated into sectors such as agriculture, planning, and land use. Local researchers and startups showcased how they’re using artificial intelligence and data platforms to turn space data into actionable insights. Francesco Vilhena da Cunha, CEO of GeoSat, presented how high-resolution Earth Observation data is delivering significant value across both public and private sectors.
The second day, dedicated to European expertise, featured presentations from experts at EARSC, Terradue, Oikon, and the University of Malta. Applications covered topics such as sustainable development, maritime monitoring, and urban planning. Professor Charles Galdes shared his research on how AI and satellite data are being used to estimate ocean chemistry and strengthen environmental and climate-related efforts.
The event concluded with a panel discussion featuring representatives from Xjenza Malta, EURISY, and national space offices, discussing strategies for further adoption and integration of satellite data into policy and operational solutions.
This event confirmed Malta’s ambition to embrace space technologies not only as research tools but as a pillar for sustainable decision-making across all sectors of society.
