100/100: Roberta Metsola Named EU’s Most Politically Influential MEP, Agius Saliba Makes Top 50

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has been named the most politically influential MEP in all of the European Union, achieving a perfect total score of 100/100.

Carried out by EUmatrix.eu, the analysis looked at the current Parliamentary term which started all the way back in July 2019, and was based on the collection of “tens of thousands of facts and figures by the team, which has over 15 years of experience in measuring the political dimension of EU policy-making”. Metsola, according to the analysis, achieved the spot for a number of reasons, from her being the EP President to her role as a “key legislator on strengthening democracy, media freedom and pluralism in the EU”.

Manfred Weber, the chair of the Parliament’s biggest political group the EPP – to which Metsola belongs and claims three of the top four spots – came in second, with the S&D’s Iratxe García Pérez from Spain listed as third.

Meanwhile, while Metsola was the only Maltese MEP to be listed in the top 40, PL’s Alex Agius Saliba (who is also the Vice-Chair of the S&D) was the next-highest-ranked local politician, and the only other one to make the Top 50, at 46th.

Agius Saliba, also made it on another list – the Top 40 MEPs Under 40 Years Old – no doubt spurred on by his instrumental role in making tech giant Apple change its charging ports to USB-C across the continent. In this list, Agius Saliba was also joined by fellow PL MEP Josianne Cutajar.

Malta was hailed as a country whose MEPs are “able to play an important role in the European Parliament despite coming from the smallest EU countries”, with Metosla and Agius Saliba being shouted out yet again as politicians who help the small countries “punch above their weight the most”.
