72% Of Maltese Would Vote If The European Elections Were Held Next Week, Survey Finds
72% of Maltese respondents have expressed their likelihood to vote if the European elections were to be held next week, a Eurobarometer survey has revealed.
This survey gathered data in February of this year, serving as the final Eurobarometer data being released ahead of the upcoming MEP elections.
Meanwhile, 17% stated that they’re unlikely to vote, 7% claimed to be neutral, and 4% ineligible.
This is one percent higher than the EU average.
While this is on average with the current EU consensus, it is substantially lower than what Malta is used to in its general elections even with 2022’s 60-year-low turnout, estimated to be 85.5%.
However, when voters last elected MEPs in 2019, turnout in Malta stood at 72.7% versus the 50.7% EU average.
The study further looked at the priorities of European citizens for the electoral campaigns as well as for the next five years.
In Malta, the majority of the respondents agreed that migration and asylum should be an electoral priority while agriculture and food security are the aspects the EU should focus on to reinforce its position in the world.
Similarly, Maltese respondents believe that when it comes to protecting values, peace is the most important.
The elections will be taking place on 8th June.
