2025 is off to a great start for Malta’s Rebecca Buttigieg, who has just been chosen as one of the European Young Leaders from across the EU for the Class of 2025 🇲🇹

“We are thrilled to launch the new class of #EYL40,” Friends of Europe posted this morning, announcing the “diverse group of leaders driving change in their countries and shaping Europe’s future”.
Malta’s Parliamentary Secretary for Reforms and Equality since 2022, Buttigieg has found herself at the forefront of a number of progressive government initiatives and announcements, with the programme highlighting “efforts to tackle inequality and promote gender rights”. From the launching of the National Strategy against Domestic Violence, the promotion of free menstrual products being distributed in schools, the strengthening of legislation on LGBTQ+ rights and the introduction of a law to outlaw virginity testing, Buttigieg was hailed for her work ever since her election to Parliament back in 2022.

“I’m honoured to be recognised as one of the 40 young people in Europe for my work in our country,” Buttigieg posted moments ago following the announcement. “This is an important and prestigious moment for me, which continues to encourage me to passionately work for the good of our community.”

Prime Minister Robert Abela, meanwhile, took to social media to congratulate young Buttigieg, saying he was “proud that the Labour Party continues to produce talented politicians who are pushing important reforms towards a more equal and inclusive society”.

Malta’s presence and importance on the EU level has long been celebrated, with sitting European Parliament President Robert Metsola receiving the same Young Leaders honour back in 2017.

Congratulations Rebecca!
