Breaking: Roberta Metsola Gets Re-Elected As European Parliament President
Roberta Metsola has officially been re-elected as the European Parliament President, gaining the majority of votes from over 700 MEPs.
The other contender for the seat was Irene Montero – a member of the leftist Podemos party who previously served as the Minister of Equality in the Socialist Government of Spain from January 2020 to November 2023. Montero’s nomination was put forth yesterday evening at the last minute.
Metsola got the absolute majority with 562 votes to Montero’s 61.
This is another historic moment in Metsola’s parliamentary term, being only the second time a President was re-elected in the European Parliament. Martin Schulz is the only other politician to have done this, maintaining the role between 2012 and 2017.
Lovin Malta is currently reporting from the European Parliament in Strasbourg so stay tuned for all the latest updates.
