Independent Cassola made it all the way to the 34th count in Saturday’s MEP election, helping to elect Nationalist Party MEPs David Casa and Peter Agius along the way.

The former Alternattiva Demokratika leader obtained a total of 22,941 votes, considerably higher than his 2019 tally of 2,858. Unfortunately for Cassola, it wasn’t his best showing at an MEP election, with the green candidate falling short of his 2004 personal best of  29,013. He was eliminated significantly later into proceeds than he was in 2004, however.

Cassola was eliminated at a point when only two candidates – Roberta Metsola and Alex Agius Saliba – had been elected. He had 834 fewer votes than Claudette Abela Baldacchino. In fact, his elimination resulted in the election of both Peter Agius and David Casa who inherited 4,273 votes and 3,420 votes from him respectively.

Next to be elected was Daniel Attard, who needed some 70 additional votes which he got from the Casa and Agius’s surplus votes. This left one remaining place, which went to Thomas Bajada, who at that point that 25,047.

Cassola’s performance was by the far the best out of all of the independent candidates who contested the election, which, in addition to a swing towards the PN appears to have also seen independent and third-party candidates fare better than in previous elections.
