Cypriot MEP Urges EU To Challenge United States And Recognise Palestine

Cypriot MEP and YouTuber Fidias Panayiotou urged the European Union to challenge its “biggest ally”, the United States, and recognise Palestine as a state.

Panayiotou called out the US for blocking United Nations resolutions seeking to recognise a Palestinian state.

“Alongside the US, only eight other countries refuse to recognise Palestine. On the other hand 143 countries around the world recognise Palestine, many of them represented here at the European Parliament,” Panayiotou said during a plenary debate in Strasbourg.

He continued by calling on the EU to push for a two-state solution and challenge its biggest ally.

“Now more than ever we should act independently of the US so we stop the genocide of Palestinians.”

The US has been criticised for using its UN veto to protect Israel since it launched its full-scale military campaign on Gaza following the Hamas attack of 7th October. It has vetoed a Palestinian request to the United Nations Security Council for full UN membership, blocking the world body’s recognition of a Palestinian state, as well as ceasefire resolutions.

Similarly, the EU has been lambasted for following the US’ foreign policy lead and not taking a more independent and supportive stance on Palestine.

Malta has also fallen short of recognising Palestine as an independent state. Back in 2024, Prime Minister Robert Abela said Malta agreed to take the first steps towards recognising a Palestinian state. Almost a whole year later, this is yet to happen.
