Glenn Micallef, Malta’s Commissioner-designate for the European Commission, has secured approval for his appointment as Commissioner for Intergenerational Solidarity, Youth, Culture and Sport. His confirmation comes after a rigorous hearing before Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), where he faced tough questioning and scrutiny.

During the session, Micallef answered questions regarding his qualifications and relative lack of EU experience. He committed to advocating for youth, culture, sport and intergenerational fairness, in line with the EU’s goals on equality and inclusivity.

In the end, Micallef sailed through the hearing with MEPs being persuaded by his responses and deciding supporting his appointment to his role despite initial reservations.

Micallef’s nomination was far from straightforward. Originally, the Maltese government had intended to put forward former Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne for the role, but his candidacy was no longer viable after he was implicated in the Vitals Global Healthcare scandal. Following this setback, and under reported pressure from the European Commission to nominate a female candidate, the government ultimately settled on Micallef.

At the hearing, MEP’s raised concern about Micallef’s political background, noting his lack of ministerial experience. Micallef responded by showing his work in local government in Malta and stressing his commitment to youth-centric policies across the EU.

He outlined plans to build cultural connections and boost resources for young people, urging the need for equitable opportunities and engagement.

Prime Minister Robert Abela congratulated Micallef, expressing his pride in Malta’s new representation in the European Commission. “Wishing him great success in shaping a vibrant and inclusive future for Europe”.

David Casa, Malta’s longest-serving MEP, praised Micallef’s performance, saying he “did very well” and showed appreciation for Micallef’s commitment to Malta’s role in the EU.

Ian Borg Minister for Foreign Affairs and Deputy PM also applauded Micallef, reposting Prime Minister Robert Abela’s post on platform X.

Thomas Bajada youngest Maltese MEP had a meeting with Micallef the new Commissioner. Bajada expressed enthusiasm for the impact Micallef will bring to the table, particularly for Maltese and Gozitan communities, saying he looks forward to future developments.

Congratulations Glenn Micallef!
