‘I Want A More Social And Ecological EU’: Meet MEP Candidate Ralph Cassar

Former Local Councillor and current Secretary General of ADPD Ralph Cassar is contesting in the upcoming Member of the European Parliament elections.
Active with the Greens since 1992, Cassar has become well-versed in politics and wants to tackle the “real issues” from the European stage.
Cassar hopes to form part of the counteractive power against the big corporations supported by the “conservatives and neoliberals” in the European Parliament.
This article is part of a Lovin Malta series with MEP candidates ahead of the upcoming election. The same questions are being asked to every single candidate and their answers are being published in their entirety.
What made you want to run for the MEP Elections?
In Malta other parties are more interested in petty tit-for-tat politics. I am interested in the issues, and I want to push for a more social and ecological European Union.
Why should the public vote for you in the upcoming election?
I am well versed in green and social policies which need to be implemented fairly for a better quality of life for us all. We need to contrast the power of big corporations, supported by the conservative and neoliberals in the EP, not to mention the local construction and business lobbies which want business-as-usual supported by the PLPN duopoly.
What is the main issue/top priority you would be focusing on if you were to be elected?
A Green and Social Europe.
Can you mention one weakness and one strength of the EU?
Certain issues have to be tackled on an EU level, such as the tax evasion by multinational corporations and climate change. That’s the strength of unity! On the other hand a weakness is that the EP cannot initiate legislation but depends on the Commission.
Tell us who your favourite candidate is from another party?
Voting for other parties means perpetuating the status quo in Malta, perpetuating parochialism. I am so disappointed in the way politics is done in Malta that I have no favourite candidates from other parties.
I would vote for Sandra Gauci and Mina Tolu.
