‘I’ll Make Sure Those Suffering In Silence Will Be Heard,’ Jesmond Bonello Says Ahead Of MEP Elections

Jesmond Bonello has begun campaigning to earn a spot as a Member of the European Parliament and he has pledged to be the voice of Maltese workers.

The former UĦM Voice of the Workers President is contesting on the Labour Party’s ticket this June. He’s worked within the workers’ organisation for the last 20 years, assuming a range of roles during his time.

He’s now hoping to take up a new role, this time in one of Europe’s legislative bodies – the European Parliament (EP).

This is part of a Lovin Malta series with MEP candidates ahead of the upcoming election. The same questions are being asked to every single candidate and their answers are being published in their entirety.

1. What made you want to run for the MEP Elections?

As you may know, I come from the workers’ sector, and I was one of the persons who worked in favour of Malta joining EU in 2002. While Malta has seen positive changes at the EU level in recent years, I believe there’s more to be done, especially for the common Maltese workers, pensioners, and their families.

With my experience as President of UHM, both in the national and European fora, I am confident in my ability to deliver better results for this crucial demographic and socio-economic issues.

2. Why should the public vote for you in the upcoming election?

Rather than solely advocating for myself, I urge the public to consider all Labour Party candidates, as together, we offer substantial contributions. However, for those inclined to support me, I assure unwavering dedication to bringing about positive changes for every Maltese citizen.

If elected, I will ensure that the voices of countless workers, pensioners, and families, who have been suffering in silence are heard. I believe there is still a lot to be done in the EU regarding the social aspect and I am eager to work hard in this sector.

3. What is the main issue/top priority you would be focusing on if you were to be elected?

Given my background, my primary focus would be on addressing pressing issues such as pay equality, workplace rights, and fair labour practices addressing other social issues like homelessness and people at risk of poverty, as well as accessibility to employment. These are pivotal areas demanding attention and action within European society.

4. Can you mention one weakness and one strength of the EU?

The EU’s strength lies in its ability to foster collaboration and unity among diverse member states, promoting peace and stability. However, for me, a notable weakness is its bureaucratic complexity, which at times hampers swift decision-making and responsiveness to urgent matters. Another weakness I notice is the fact that EU gives little attention to the fact that being a small Island Malta has different scenarios from other EU countries.

5. Tell us who your favourite candidate is from another party?

While I respect all candidates running, I prefer not to single out any particular individual from another party.

6. And finally, if you weren’t running, who would you vote for?

In hypothetical circumstances, Joseph Muscat would earn my vote. His intellect and forward-thinking approach make him a compelling choice to lead where others have faltered.
