EP President Roberta Metsola extended her best wishes to the people in the United States as they begin this “new chapter” with Donald Trump as President.

In a statement made during the start of this week’s plenary, she explained that today’s geopolitical challenges require a renewed transatlantic alliance guided by “shared values”.

“The bond between Europe and the United States has been a cornerstone of peace, security and prosperity for decades,” she stated at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

She went on to affirm that while the relationship will not be “without its challenges”, Europe is ready to work towards a positive outcome.

“Europe stands ready to work together, to strengthen our bond as friends and as partners to shape a world of stability, opportunity and hope.”

The Transatlantic Alliance, otherwise known as NATO, brings together 30 member countries from both sides of the Atlantic, consulting and cooperating in the fields of security and defence. It was established following the second world war and seeks to promote stability in an unpredictable geopolitical environment.

Malta is one of a handful of EU member states not apart of this alliance due to the island’s status as a neutral country.
