European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has accepted the nomination by European People’s Party for her to run as president of the parliament once again.

“The great trust that the Maltese and Gozitan people put in me last week puts a greater responsibility on me than ever before. A sense of duty to represent all Maltese and Gozitans in the best possible way,” Metsola wrote on Facebook, referring to last week’s MEP election that saw her make history in Malta after gaining over 87,000 votes.

Metsola explained that, after speaking with Opposition Leader Bernard Grech, as well as her colleagues in the EP, she decided to accept the EPP’s nomination to have her as European Parliament President once again.

“I understand that this is a journey of great challenges, but with your support, we can get there and our country can be represented in the leadership of the European Union.”

“At the same time, while I can keep waving the Maltese flag wherever I am, I will be working with more determination and energy in our country and in the Nationalist Party to be part of this wave of change in Malta and Gozo.”

“Together, we can fulfill the Maltese dream.”

During her time as president, Metsola has dealt with a war in Ukraine, corruption in the parliament, and the destruction of Gaza – three complex crises that shook the institution. However, considering her electoral success as well as her re-nomination, it’s clear that the people, both publicly and politically, trust her as a European leader.
