Watch: Glenn Micallef Asked ‘What Is A Woman?’ During MEP Grilling
Malta’s EU Commissioner-delegate Glenn Micallef dodged the famous “What is a woman?” question during his grilling by MEPs this afternoon.
Croatian MEP Stephen Nikola Bartolica asked Micallef to provide a definition of what a woman is and to clarify whether he thinks “men competing in women’s sport is a European value”.
Micallef, who has been nominated as EU Commissioner for Youth, Culture, Sport and Inter-Generational Fairness, dodged the first question outright.
With regards to the second question, which was related to controversies around trans athletes participating in elite sports, he insisted that the EU should allow sporting associations to set their own rules without any external influence.
“I will defend this sporting model,” he said. “My priority will be to encourage Europeans to be active and stay healthy. Sport is for everyone, no matter your background or gender or identity. That is the union I believe in, a union of equality.”
That final remark clearly went down well with several members of the Committee on Culture and Education, who applauded Micallef.
