Re-elected European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has said that the parliament will build Europe for Daphne Caruana Galizia, Pelin Kaya, and so many other European women who are no longer able to see it.

Metsola said this during the speech given after she was re-elected to the head of the institution – becoming the first women to get awarded the role twice as well as getting the highest vote percentage in European history.

During her speech, Metsola referenced a host of crises while pointing to several different beacons of hope.

She stated that Europe can not be a place where youths are unable to afford a place to live, nor can it be a place where women continue being abused and where people are not able to love who they want to love.

Metsola assured that the war in Ukraine will remain at the top of the agenda while doubling down on the union’s competitiveness is also an essential priority. She pledged that Europe will invest in industry and keep ahead of the AI curb to reap the benefits of the technology as well as mitigate the consequences.

The re-elected president also spoke about peace.

“For peace – a real peace with justice, with dignity and with liberty. Because in Europe, we understand how to heal seemingly impossible divides. That must also be the guiding philosophy of our reaction to the conflict in the Middle East, where even in the fog of war ours must continue to be the voice of humanity pushing for an end to the intergenerational cycle of violence, for a two-State Solution, a sustainable peace and the return of those hostages still taken.”
