MEP Cyrus Engerer delivered a speech in French while he was addressing the European Parliament for the last plenary of the current mandate.

“From my first days in the European Parliament, I wanted to find the courage to speak at least once publicly in French by the end of the mandate,” the MEP shared on social media.

“My assistants held me to the challenge and in the last plenary of this mandate, I delivered a speech en français,” Engerer added.

Cyrus’ speech focused on the 10-year anniversary of the European Commission and European Council’s decision not to reform the European Parliament’s right to carry out public inquiry.

“Your institutions’ attitude is wholly unacceptable and disrespectful towards us, and disrespectful towards the European citizens who we directly represent,” Engerer addressed the EP.

“The European Commission and the Member State governments are afraid of any public inquiry. This is a right all parliaments should have,” Engerer stated.

Starting his political career as a young activist fighting for gay rights and opposing bipartisanship, Engerer has never shied away from being outspoken and sticking to his beliefs… even if they did not align with his party’s.

Last October, he became the first-ever PL politician to attend a Repubblika event, an NGO that the Labour Party has repeatedly denounced as being part of the opposition. And just two days ago, he seemingly called out his fellow PL MEPs for not attending the celebration of Malta’s 20-year-old EU membership, saying “it’s a pity” that only three out of the islands’ six MEPs were in the chamber. Then, yesterday, he announced he is part of Il-Kollettiv, a new group of social and environmental activists who have not excluded contesting the general election.
