From €5 Million To €55 Million: Malta Set To Get Ten-Fold Increase In EU Climate Funding

Malta is set to benefit from a ten-fold increase in funding under a provisional agreement reached on the Social Climate Fund, a key part of the EU’s climate change strategy.

Initially set to receive €5 million, Maltese citizens can now expect to benefit from €55 million through the Social Climate Fund, after negotiations led by Maltese MEP David Casa in 2022.

“I believe that there was a strong case to be made and I am very happy to have achieved this result,” Casa affirmed.

The main mission of the fund is to bring down energy bills and move away from fossil fuels.

“We can achieve both by investing in energy efficiency and renewable energy. With the Social Climate Fund, I want to see investments reach citizens with more solar panels, more efficient appliances, better insulation, and greener alternatives to transport,” the MEP said.

The provisional agreement will now need to be confirmed by a vote in the European Parliament.

The Social Climate Fund is part of the “Fit for 55 in 2030 package”, which is the EU’s plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, in line with the European Climate Law.
