Labour MEP Josianne Cutajar has just announced she will not be recontesting the upcoming EU Parliament elections in June.

“After 12 years serving in the public life, I took the decision to not contest,” Cutajar wrote on social media this afternoon. “It’s a difficult decision, but one which was necessary at this stage of my life.”

The 34-year-old lawyer was elected as MEP back in 2019, and is now the second PL MEP to announce she will not contesting after Alfred Sant.

“From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank the thousands who gave me their support throughout this journey,” she continued, thanking everyone from her party to her Nadur electorate – who had voted her in as a local councillor on two separate occasions. “I am proud to have had the privilege to serve you, to serve the Maltese and Gozitan people at a European level.”

“I returned your trust in work for our country. I maintained continuous pressure for EU policies that recognise the realities and challenges of islands like ours and worked for a more inclusive digital sector and the principles of equality and social justice,” she continued, finishing off by saying she was “looking forward to more work in your name in the coming months”.

Cutajar’s announcement was met with a number of comments congratulating her, including fellow Labour politicians and MEPs like Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri and Alex Agius Saliba, who thanked her for her work over the last couple of years.
