Running Again: PN’s Peter Agius Approved To Contest Next Year’s MEP Election

Peter Agius’ run to become an MEP in 2024 has been approved by the PN. The campaign slogan “Enerġija Ġdida” or “New Energy” acknowledges his unsuccessful 2019 run, whilst reflecting an optimistic outlook for this second attempt.

“I’m ready to represent you with New Energy!”

In a press release, Agius outlined that his priorities as MEP would be to attract “EU opportunities to Malta and ensure that these reach all sectors of society” whilst implementing “a more efficient representation of Maltese needs in EU decision making”.

Agius added to this that he will seek to strengthen Malta’s unique position within the Union.

“EU rules are being moulded without an island dimension, setting us off at a disadvantage. We have seen this recently with EU transport, environmental and food production rules.”

Specific policies intended to curb these disadvantages have yet to be proposed, but Agius’ past policy positions point towards prioritising consumer protection, EU funding and youth opportunity, transport and connectivity, Gozo and food production.

Agius thanked the members of the executive who unanimously approved his candidacy, along with his family and friends who were with him along the way.

“With their help and that of others who are continuing to connect with us, we’re going to continue to work to deliver concrete results for Maltese and Gozitan families.”

Agius used to head the European Parliament Office in Malta and once worked as a speechwriter for then-European Parliament President Antonio Tajani.

He received 10,474 first-count votes at the 2019 MEP election, making him the fourth most popular PN candidate behind Roberta Metsola, David Casa and Frank Psaila. However, he failed to get elected, with PN losing a seat to PL and only managing to elect Metsola and Casa.

In 2021, the PN appointed Agius as its chief spokesperson in an attempt to improve its outreach efforts ahead of the general election, but this turned out to be another dismal result for the party.

Do you think Peter Agius would make a good MEP?
