On Sunday, Festa Annimali 2025 was successfully held at Ta’ Qali, bringing together families and their pets for a day dedicated to celebrating and raising awareness about animal welfare.

The event was officially opened by Minister Anton Refalo and Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said, with the presence of Dr Lydia Abela, wife of the Prime Minister, Joseph John Vella, Director for Animal Welfare and Alison Bezzina, Commissioner for Animal Welfare.

Throughout the day, families had the opportunity to meet with voluntary organisations, veterinarians, trainers and animal behaviourists to learn more about animal care and welfare services. Volunteers from the Animal Welfare Department were also present with dogs currently under the care of Animal Welfare and still awaiting adoption. This initiative aimed to encourage more people to adopt pets and give them a loving home.

Festa Annimali 2025 further strengthened the government’s efforts to promote pet adoption and raise awareness about animal rights, while also offering families a chance to celebrate the special bond they share with their pets.

Minister Anton Refalo emphasised the importance of such events, stating that they showcase the government’s commitment to animal rights. “Alongside these events, several measures and reforms have been implemented to ensure the proper protection of animals. The Ministry will also continue to support those caring for abandoned animals in sanctuaries,” Minister Refalo said.

Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said highlighted that Festa Annimali is proof of a government that prioritises animal welfare. “Beyond organising a day filled with activities for families to enjoy, we also demonstrated that animals remain a key focus in our policies. I extend my gratitude to everyone who contributed to making this event a success,” Bugeja Said stated.

As part of the event, the Pet Memorial Garden was also inaugurated in Ta’ Qali, located opposite the farmer’s market. This peaceful space is designed for those who have lost their pets, featuring commemorative statues of cats, dogs and rabbits as a tribute to beloved pets that have passed away. Benches have been placed for visitors, while trees and plants have been added to create a tranquil and reflective atmosphere.
