British Film Starring Maltese Trans Actor Gets Nominated At Sunrise Film Festival

A London-based film starring a Maltese multidisciplinary artist has been nominated for “Best British Short” and “Best Story” at the BIFA-qualifying Sunrise Film Festival.
Passage, starring Romeo Roxman Gatt, was one of just four films nominated out of 187 selected entries.
Romeo is a trans actor who works between London and Malta, he also founded Rosa Kwir – an archive bringing together stories of trans men, non-binary & LBQI masc-presenting people living in Malta.
He’s led and contributed to multiple projects in Malta and beyond, from showcasing his work in a 40-artist warehouse exhibition in Berlin to writing a book inspired by what should’ve been a short visit to Malta that unexpectedly turned into a longer stay due to difficult news.
Romeo has now transitioned to the big screen, starring in Passage which tells the intimate story of a displaced father and his child, as they navigate harsh moorlands and seek refuge from an unforgiving wilderness.
Passage was written and directed by Orion Isaacs, produced by Emily Eyre and stars Romeo and Jimmy Maslin Fong.
The Sunrise Film Festival will take place between 22nd and 25th May in Lowestoft, celebrating diverse stories and underrepresented filmmakers. It’s one of the many pathways for filmmakers to have their work considered for British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) accolades.
