A new series from National Geographic, set to stream on Disney+, is currently being filmed in Malta.

The series will combine documented facts about the natural tragedy of Pompeii with drama, narrated by renowned actor Tom Hiddleston.

Culture Minister Owen Bonnici, together with Film Commissioner Johann Grech, visited the set at Fort Ricasoli, where they met with the production team and actors.

Minister Bonnici stated: “The fact that a production of this level is being made in our country shows how Malta has become a serious and established destination in the film sector. We are proud that, thanks to the hard work being carried out, we are attracting international productions while creating quality job opportunities for many Maltese people.”

He added: “As a government, we are committed to further strengthening these creative investments that bring with them jobs and international recognition for our country.”

Commenting on the production, Film Commissioner Johann Grech remarked: “We are proud of the talent of our workers and the world-class skills they offer for productions shot in Malta. Productions like ‘Surviving Pompeii’ not only showcase our locations but also create high-quality jobs for Maltese crew.”

Around 65% of the entire production is being shot in Malta, including at Villa Bologna, Fort Ricasoli and Majjistral Park, with some 167 Maltese workers participating across various sectors.

This British production will consist of three episodes of around 60 minutes each. It has also benefited from the Cash Rebate programme.
