The Ambush has racked up an impressive list of awards which include: International Cosmopolitan Award for Best Horror Short and Best Actor for a Short Film, WSXA International Film Awards for Best Short Film, Malta Youth Festival 2024 for Best Film, Best Director and Best Cinematography, Malta Cine Circle for Best Editing and lastly IndieX Film Fest (Los Angeles) for Best Short of the Season (Special Jury Award) and Outstanding Achievement Award (Horror Short).

Lovin Malta had the chance to talk to the Main Actor, Producer and Stunt choreographer Jean Carbonaro.

When asked what the most challenging scene to film was, he immediately said it was the fight scene, as they only had 2 weeks of rehearsals. But, Carbonaro noted that: “I believed that we achieved a great fight scene thanks to my training partner Isaac from rush parkour”.

What sets The Ambush apart from other films in the zombie genre is its ability to engage its viewers.

Speaking about its appeal, Carbonaro said:

“The ambush has two important things that will keep you on the edge, and that is good entertainment and the good twist that definitely stands out to make the film super enjoyable for the audience to watch. The zombies are quite hybrids as they’re tightening to turn into their full form, so it’s different from other zombie films that we’ve seen.”

Despite the creativity and effort put into local productions, there remains a sense that Maltese films are underappreciated.

“We need more support from the locals especially,” Carbonaro concluded.

The Ambush continues to show that once again, there should be more investment in the local film industry as talent is brewing right in front of our doorstep!

The Ambush will be available for streaming later this year after its festival run. Viewers can watch it on IndyDogFilm.
