Watch: First Date Turns Feral In Maltese Psychological Horror Short Film
Have you ever gotten anxiety so severe on a first date that the personification of your subconscious threatens to cause immeasurable harm to your and your date? No? Tom can’t relate.
Local writer, director and key grip, Randall Degabriele brings to life, “Mind vs Brain,” the story of Tom, an awkward 20-to-30-something-year-old stuck in the world of dating, who finally meets Stella for their long-awaited first date.
Throughout the night, trouble starts brewing as his evolved subconscious seeps through the depths of his mind, derailing the entire occasion by causing an unpredictable series of malicious events.
The story promises to “leave audiences thinking long after the credits roll,” with surreal scenes that will tackle mental health issues with a unique twist from the creative mind behind the project.
With the main cast featuring Ramon Camilleri Mortimer in the lead role alongside Sasha Zhdanova and the iconic Matthew Kofi Browne as Tom’s menacing subconscious.
“The short film was created as a proof of concept for a potential feature-length version of the same story,” Degabriele shared, “It was made entirely on a zero budget, with the aim of showcasing the talent that exists locally, both in front of and behind the camera, as the entire cast and crew are based in Malta.”
Degabriele not only wrote and directed the project, but also produced the film with photography director Malcolm Camilleri, local photography powerhouse Lorella Castillo alongside Whitney Ann Borg.
“This is just the beginning—in the first half of next year, we plan to release two more short films that we completed this year.”
With a cast and crew of some of the best and most creative faces on our island, there’s no knowing what’s in store for the indie film industry.
The full short of ‘Mind vs Brain’ will be dropping on indydogfilm.com sometime next week, so stay tuned for it and more from the cast!
