The controversial 10-minute promo film starring David Walliams has finally aired after three months of waiting.

Once Upon A Time In Malta made headlines over the summer with industry insiders telling Lovin Malta the short clip cost the country far more than €500,000 thanks to its lavish production costs.

Besides the famous British actor, the promo features Malta’s very own Film Commissioner Johann Grech in two scenes. First, he hands Walliams the “legendary” Golden Bee trophy before the comedian was set to present the Mediterrane Film Festival. However, the task doesn’t prove to be that easy with Walliams falling into a wormhole where he travels back to Malta during the days of the Knights.

The Knights take back this iconic award, which Walliams likens to a doorstep, and imprisons him for having it in the first place. His cellmate turns out to be the one and only rebel Dun Gaetano Mannarino who helps Walliams escape and prepare for a comic battle to win back the trophy, travel to 2024 and finally present the show.

Grech pops back onto the screen in the last scene blasting Walliams for being late and questioning his outfit choice.

The clip was aired yesterday evening as part of the Golden Bee Awards and it featured several local film stars like Ray Calleja who plays one of the country’s historic knights.
