11 Maltese Festive Foods We Should Be Eating All Year Round

Article Featured Image

In Malta we practically have different traditional festive dishes for almost every month of the year. That’s a pity, because we want to have our prinjolata every day for a whole year, and not every day for a whole month. Here’s a list of Maltese festive foods we need to be eating all year round.

1. Prinjolata

This gargantuan dessert should be crowned the King of Carnival. Why do we need to wait for a whole year to have a piece of the happiest dessert in our land?

2. Figolli

Right now we are really not running short of figolli. Everywhere you turn, you see one of these lamb or heart-shaped inanimate pastries filled with almonds and covered in ill-decorated icing. However, there will very soon come a time when we will be crying a river over our long-gone lamb shaped pastries.

3. Kwareżimal

These Lent treats keep those who fast from falling into a pit of despair. Kwareżimal is pretty much the only vegan candy we would sacrifice our thigh for.

4. Imbuljuta tal-Qastan

This Midnight Mass comfort drink is made of chestnuts, cocoa, cloves and oranges. We need to have this for breakfast every day for all of winter, and not just between Christmas and New Year goddamnit.

5. Pastizzi tal-Inċova

These pastry babies are only available for us to eat during Lent, because you know, fish.

Sadly, local pastizzerias do not offer these treats all year round — #WhyMaximsWhy

6. Sfineċ tal-Bakkaljaw

This is seriously the most underrated food ever.

7. Għadam tal-Mejtin

The figolla’s goth cousin, these bones are eaten in November.

Wake me up when October ends.

8. Qagħaq tal-Appostli

Yes, create the most delicious piece of bread known to humanity, pop a couple of almonds on it, and only let us eat it for two weeks once a year. What a cruel country we live in.

9. Karamelli tal-Ħarrub

These baby glass-like candies are amazingly sweet and not as hard to get lately.

10. Torta ta’ San Martin

This pie is rarely eaten, seen or heard of nowadays, but we all think it needs to make a huge comeback.

11. Ħobża ta’ San Martin

Hot cross bun move over, we need our ħobża ta’ San Martin NOW.
