$5 Pastizz In Arizona Makes People Appreciate Local Food Prices

Pastizzi are common food items on the island, even though they take some serious skill to actually make decently.

Going for about 0.50c in Malta, people online were gobsmacked to find that a single pastizz in the US goes for the princely sum of $5.

And a Facebook post showing a pastizzi vendor in Arizona selling his wares at that price led to a major conversation on the difference in prices between the two countries.

The poster added “In Arizona pastizzi costs $5 each. Imagine if they cost €5 here. Lol”

Some of the comments didn’t hold back.

“Maybe they are quite a bit bigger than the ones here (it is the USA after all),”said one.

“Might have less of an obesity problem if they did!” exclaimed someone sarcastically.

“Assassinated journalist. Widespread corruption. Severe lacks in rule of law. Destroyed environment. All of those are fine and just part of daily life. If pastizzi were to touch the €2 mark however…” warned one person ominously.

“Omg… maybe they are laced with gold leaf,” wondered one person.

“We pay $4.50 at Pastizzi Cafe in Newtown, Sydney,” noted another.

The pastizz in question was produced by an iconic itinerant food truck, The Pastizzi Express made by Joseph Gauci who goes by the simple name of Malta Joe.

“Malta Joe’s Traditional Maltese Pastizzi originate from a family recipe that has been handed down through the generations, from Malta, and brought here to America for you to enjoy,” claims the website.

He offers up pastizzi ranging from the classic rikotta cheese and piżelli (peas) to his own signature southwest recipe which is made up of “a tasty blend of bacon and hatch chillies, accompanied by our famous ricotta cheese base”.

Would you snap up a pastizz for $5 if you happened to run into the Pastizzi Express in Arizona?
