6 Local Bakeries That Will Get Your Mouth Watering And Stomach Growling

Bread is an essential dietary to us Maltese people, it is almost as important to us as the air we breath if not more. Here’s a list of local bakeries you definitely should visit on your next hunt for great treats. Jaqsmulek qalbek.

1. Ta’ Barbetta

Located in Zejtun, Ta’ Barbetta is well known among the southerners for its delicious treats and baked goods. If you go to Ta’ Barbetta for bread, you will end up coming out with two bags of baked goods — cakes, biscuits, roasted nuts, bread rolls and sweet buns will melt your heart in a second as soon as you walk into this traditional bakery. 

2. Emanuel’s Bakery

Emanuel’s Bakery has been baking traditional bread for the last 50 years. Apart from the usual delicacies, Emanuel’s Bakery also serves seasonal sweets like hot cross buns and kwareżimal. However, it is mostly famous for its amazing pizzas and ftajjar.

3. Rojolin

Rojolin Bakery is popular among locals. This traditional bakery even offers tear-inducing treats like hot cross buns, qagħaq tal-ħmira and all the bread you can imagine. 

4. L-Aħwa

This small bakery in Sliema has been open since 1968 and hasn’t stopped being busy since. No matter what time you go. During Christmas time this bakery still hones the custom of slow cooking roasts for families in their traditional ovens. They also bake traditional sweets like qagħaq and biskuttini.

5. Tunajja

Another veteran baker in Zejtun filling the street with an irresistible aroma, Tunajja bakes traditional breads along with amazing pizzas and ftajjar cooked in their Forn tal-Ħatab. 

6. Frensh

Although strictly speaking Frensh is a french bakery, it still bakes delicious bread and the most amazing pastries ever. When waking down to Balluta, try to make it a point to visit this bakery and buy around five boxfuls of treats.

BONUS: Ta’ Doughnuts

We know, they don’t bake bread, fine. But Ta’ Doughnuts still counts as a bakery considering the amount of doughnuts. We swear to god, if you go into this shop to buy one doughnut, you will come out bearing at least a whole box of this stuff.
